 In Adobe Illustrator, we can create a wide range of effects. It has its own plug-ins, and new updates have enabled us to create custom effects. Today we will learn to create a Smoke Brush Effect in Adobe Illustrator.

Step 1
Create a new document and select the Rectangle Tool from the Tool Panel to create a dark color background. Now select the Pen Tool from the Tool Panel and draw a stroke of white color or you may choose a grey color. The stroke size must be 0.5 pt.
 
Select the stroke and click on Object in the Menu Bar. Place the cursor on Transform and select Move. When you will click on Move a dialogue box will appear. In that dialogue box, select the horizontal position as 0.05 pt, vertical 0 pt, and distance 0.05 pt. Then click on Copy.

Press and hold Ctrl + D to Transform Again. (Hold till you get a size shown in the below image.)

Select all the strokes and Group them.
 
Step 2
Now select the Pen Tool and draw a thin ribbon-like shape with lots of anchor points.

Now select the Ribbon shape and bring it to the front by clicking on Arrange and then select Bring to Front.
 
Select the group of strokes and click on Opacity. A dialogue box will appear. In that dialogue box select the Blend as Screen and mark Opacity to 7%.

Step 3
Select ribbon and stokes and click on Object in the Menu Bar. Now place your cursor on Envelope Distort and select Envelope Options. A dialogue box will appear when you will click on Envelope Options.

In the Envelope Options, dialogue box select Preserve Shape Using Transparency and mark Fidelity to 100 and click OK.

Again go to Envelope Distort and click on Make with top object.

Step 4
 
Now save that ribbon as a Custom Art Brush. For those who don’t know how to save a custom art brush in adobe illustrator, I have attached the link to my tutorial.
 
After saving the art brush, select the Brush Tool from the Tool Panel and draw Smoky Effect.
