Dispersion Effect in Adobe Illustrator

Dispersion Effect is an effect which is created in Adobe Photoshopbut we will learn to create it in Adobe Illustrator.

So In today’s tutorial you will learn to create Dispersion Effect in Adobe Illustrator.




Before starting the tutorial, you need to select an image on which you want to create the Dispersion Effect.

After selecting the image, launch Adobe Illustrator and create a new document.

Now follow the steps:

Step 1

Go to File in the Menu Bar and select Place. Now browse the image which you have selected for the Dispersion Effectand click on Place to add the image to the artboard.

Select the image and click on Image Tracebutton in the Properties Panel. Select Default.

Step 2

The image will get traced into Black and White Logo. Now we will open the Image Trace Panel to edit the image trace result.

In the Image Trace Panel, set the Mode to Color and Palette to Full Tone.

Select the image and click on Expand button in the Properties Panel to convert the tracing object into paths.

After expanding the tracing result, Ungroupthem.

Step 3

Now select the Lasso Tool from the Tool Panel and with help of this tool delete the background.

Now select the small part of  right side of the image. (See the image below)

After selecting the right side, click on the Horizontal Align Right in the Align Panel.

Now press Ctrl + A and Group all the shapes.

Step 4

Zoom out the screen and select Rectangle Toolfrom the Tool Panel. Draw a rectangle and fill it with black and white gradient.


Select the rectangle and click on Effect in the Menu Bar. Place the cursor on Pixelate and select Mezzotint.


In Mezzotint dialogue box, select Coarse Dots and then click OK.



Step 5

Again select the rectangle and click on Objectin the Menu Bar and click on Expand Appearance.


After expanding the appearance, click on Image Trace button and select Black and White Logo.


Now click on Expand button in the Properties Panel.


After clicking on Expand, Ungroup them and delete the background.

Now after deleting the background, select the shapes and Release the Compound Path.


Step 6

After Releasing the Compound Path, delete all the white shapes. Then again Make the Compound Path.

After that, select all the shapes and Flip them Horizontally.


Now change the fill color to White and place this rectangle on the image and increase the size of the rectangle to cover the image.

You can also use the Direct Selection Tool to cover the image with the rectangle.

After covering the image with the rectangle, press Ctrl + A to select all the shapes.

Now create Clipping Mask and your Dispersion Effect in Adobe Illustratoris ready.


Don’t restrict the effects of Photoshop in that software only; tries them in Adobe Illustrator also.

    With the help of Selection Tool select a white shape and then click on Select Similar Objects icon. Be careful while doing this process as it will select all the white shapes in the document. Then hit backspace.
