Wrap Text using Make with Top Object in Adobe Illustrator

There are many text distorting tools and options are available in Adobe Illustrator. To distort a text into a confirm shape and size Make with Top Objectoption is used which is available under Envelope Distort.
In today’s tutorial, you will learn to Wrap Text using Make with Top Object in Adobe Illustrator. We will wrap text in a perspective shape.
Launch Adobe Illustrator and create a new document. Now, follow the below steps:

Step 1

In this step, we will create a perspective shape.
Select the Rectangle Tool and draw a rectangle on the artboard.

Now select the rectangle drawn and click on Effect in the Menu Bar. Place the cursor on 3D and select Extrude & Bevel.

After clicking on Extrude & Bevel, a dialogue box will appear on the artboard. In that dialogue box, put a checkmark on Preview and then change the angles of the shape.

Set the X-axis angle to -300 and the increase the Extrude Depth. Also, increase the value of Perspective. (See the image below)

Click OK.

Step 2

Select the perspective shape and click on Object in the Menu Bar. Then select Expand Appearance and increase the size of the shape with the help of the Selection Tool and Shift key.

Press Shift + Ctrl + G to Ungroup the selection. You might have to ungroup the selection three times.

Step 3

Now we will break the shape into different parts. Select the Pen Tool and draw straight lines over the shape as shown in the below image. These lines will help in creating the gap between the shapes and make sure to change the color of the lines so that they are easily visible.

Press Ctrl + A to select all the shapes and press Shift + Ctrl + F9 to open Pathfinder Panel. In the Pathfinder Panel, select Divide to break the shape into parts.

After selecting Divide, press Shift + Ctrl + G to ungroup the shapes.

Now with the help of the Selection Tool, select those shapes which were created with the help of the Pen Tool and remove them.

Step 4

Select the Type Tool and type your text alongside the shapes. (See the image below)

To Wrap the Text using Make with Top Object, the layer of the shape must be above the text layer. So go to the Layers Panel and arrange the layers so that all the shape layers are above the text layers.

An alternative way is to select all the shapes and Press Shift + Ctrl + ] to bring the selected layers on the top.

Step 5

After arranging the layers, select a shape and the text (press and hold the Shift key for multiple selections) and click on Object in the Menu Bar. Place the cursor on Envelope Distort and select Make with Top Object.

Similarly, we will wrap the remaining text.
