How to Resize a Layer in Photoshop?

In the previous tutorial, you had learned to Resize an Image in Photoshop and today you will see how you can Resize a Layer in Photoshop. In just a few simple steps you will learn to Resize a Layer in Photoshop.

We will use two different tools, with the help of which you can Resize a Layer, Free Transform Tool and Move Tool.

1. Resize a Layer using Free Transform Tool

Go through the following steps to Resize a Layer using Free Transform Tool.

Step 1

Open a project in Adobe Photoshop and select the layer which you want to resize. To select a layer go to the Layer Panel and click on the layer.

After selecting the layer, click on Edit in the Menu Bar and select Free Transform (Ctrl + T for Windows and Command + T for Mac)

After selecting the Free Transform, you will see a bounding box outside the element of the selected layer. Now you can drag the sides of the bounding box to resize the selected layer. You can either drag towards the center, to reduce the size, or drag away from the center, to increase the size.

Press and hold the Shift key, while resizing the layer, to maintain the aspect ratio.

After adjusting the size of the layer, either click on the checkmark icon in the Options Bar or press Enter key to apply the changes.

So this is how you can Resize a Layer using Free Transform. Now let’s see another method of Resizing a Layer in Adobe Photoshop.

2. Resize a Layer using Move Tool

Follow the below steps to Resize a Layer using Move Tool in Adobe Photoshop.

Select the layer to be resized and then select the Move Tool from the Tool Bar.

You will see a bounding box around the layer. Now you can either drag the bounding box to adjust the height and width of the layer or you can adjust them in the Options Bar. But before that, put a checkmark on Show Transform Controls in the Options Bar.

When you will drag the points of the bounding box you will see changes in the height and width of the layer in the Options Bar. To maintain the aspect ratio of height and width you can click on the chain icon.

After resizing the size of the layer, either click on the checkmark icon in the Options Bar or press Enter key to Commit Transfer.
