Glitch Text Effect in Photoshop

In this Photoshop Tutorial, you will learn to create an easy Glitch Text Effect. You will also learn the use of Photoshop’s filters, Layer Styles, and Selection Tool. Glitch means an unexpected minor imperfection or malfunction. In today’s tutorial, we will create a sudden minor imperfection effect in typography.

Step 1

Launch Adobe Photoshop and create a new document with Black as Background Content.

Select the Type Tool from the Tool Panel and type the text. With the help of the Move Tool, place the text at the center of the artboard.

Select the Text Layer in the Layers Panel and right-click to open the options menu. Then select Convert To Smart Object. The text will get converted into a Smart Object.

Now create a duplicate layer of the Smart Object Layer. Make sure that the layer is selected and click on Layer in the Menu Bar. Then select Duplicate Layer from the options list. A Duplicate Layer dialogue box will appear where you can give a name to the layer.

Double-click on the second layer (GLITCH layer) in the Layers Panel to open the Layer Style. In the Advanced Blending, uncheck R (Red color) to remove the red color from the layer.

Now, double-click on the top layer (GLITCH copy layer), and the Layer Style dialogue box will appear. Under Advanced Blending, uncheck G (Green) and B (Blue), and only Red color will be visible in the Preview box.

Let the top layer be selected and then select the Move Tool from the Tool Panel. Now move the text slightly towards left to create a Glitch Text.

Press Alt + Ctrl + Shift + E to merge the layers.

Now we will apply filters to the Glitch Text. Press Ctrl + J to create a copy of the merge layer (Layer 1).

We will apply Wave Filter to the copied layer (Layer 1 copy).

Again press Ctrl + J to copy the top layer (Layer 1 copy) in the Layers Panel.

Select the Rectangular Marquee Tool from the Tool Panel and make a thin rectangular selection of the text. (See the images below)

After making the selection, press Ctrl + T to activate Free Transform. Then transform the selection by dragging it slightly towards left.

Again, make a selection with the help of the Rectangular Marquee Tool. Then transform the selection by dragging it towards right.

Similarly, create few more selections and transform them by moving in alternate directions. This will help in creating a Glitch Text Effect in Photoshop.

Step 9

Again create a copy of the top layer by pressing Ctrl + J.

Now we will apply Mezzotint filter to the layer.

Filter > Pixelate > Mezzotint

After applying the Mezzotint filter, you will notice the stroke lines on the whole document. So, to make the stroke lines visible only on the text, we will change the blending mode to Darken.

In this step, we will apply a Pattern to make the Glitch Text Effect.

Click on the fx icon at the bottom of the Layers Panel and select Pattern Overlay.

Select Horizontal Line 1 Pattern and set the Blending Mode as Darken. Also reduce the Scale of Pattern to 65%.

In this last step, we will apply Gaussian Blur and Stain Layer Style to our Glitch Text Effect in Photoshop.

Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur

Now click on fx icon in the Layers Panel and select Stain.
