Dual Lighting Effect

While creating Dual Lighting Effect, we will only use two layers in Photoshop.

For creating the Dual Lighting Effect, the image must be selected wisely. There must be proper lighting on the subject of the image from both the direction. Otherwise, it won’t be possible to create this effect and give it a realistic touch.

Select an image for this tutorial, and then start editing it by following the below-mentioned easy to create steps:

Step 1

Launch Adobe Photoshop and open an image as a new document. The image which I have selected for this Photoshop tutorial has light coming on the subject from upward and downward.

Open the image

Step 2

After opening the image, click on Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer icon in the Layers Panel. Then select Gradient.

Select Create new fill or adjustment layer icon
Select Gradient

Gradient Fill dialogue box will appear on the document area. In that dialogue box, click on Gradient Swatch to edit the gradient color in Gradient Editor. In the Gradient Editor, edit the colors by selecting the left color stop.

The Dual Light effect can be clearly seen in the image but you can also notice the color leaking in the background. We will adjust the color leaking in this step.

Select the Red color Gradient Fill Layer and click on Add New Effect (fx) icon in the Layers Panel. Then select the Blending Options from the list. A Layer Style dialogue box will appear. In that dialogue box, adjust the Underlying Layer slider from the left side, and you can notice the changes in the image.

Step 5

You can skip this step, if not required in your image. But, as you can see, some extra red light is appearing on the front side of the subject. So to hide that light I will use the Layer Mask and Brush Tool.

Select the layer mask of the red color gradient fill layer and then select the Brush Tool from The Tool Panel. Select the Soft Brush as Brush Type. Also, select Black as the Foreground Color and move the cursor over the areas from where you want to hide the light effect.
