Today’s tutorial is about Creating Portrait from Text in Photoshop. In this quick and easy Photoshop tutorial, you will learn to create a Portrait from Text. You will look at how to turn a Portrait into a Text in just a few clicks. You can also term it as Text Portrait Effect in Photoshop.

This type of Text Portrait image is used in websites, magazines, banners, posters, etc. This is a fantastic text effect in Photoshop.

While creating this Text Portrait Effect in Photoshop, we will use Type Tool, Displace Filter, and Gaussian Blur.

Create Portrait from Text in Photoshop

Select a grayscale portrait image to create a Portrait from Text Effect. If you have selected a colored portrait image, then convert it into grayscale. You can change the Image Mode in Photoshop. Otherwise, you can simply hit Shift + Ctrl + U to Desaturate the image.

After selecting and opening the image in Adobe Photoshop, follow the below-mentioned easy to create steps:

Step 1

Duplicate the image layer by pressing Ctrl + J. A layer will be created in the Layers Panel naming Layer 1. You can rename the layer (optional).

Let Layer 1 be selected, and click on Filter in the Menu Bar. Then hover the cursor on Blur and select Gaussian Blur. Set the radius of Gaussian Blur and click OK.

Step 2

After applying the Gaussian Blur, we will save the file in .psd format.

Go to File in the Menu Bar and select Save As. Then save the file as Displace File.psd.

After saving the file, delete the duplicate layer (Layer 1).

Select the Type Tool from the Tool Panel and draw a text box covering the whole image.

In the Character Panel, set the Font Style and Font Size of the text. Also, select All Caps for maintaining a similar height of the letters. Then set the Font Color as Black.

In the Paragraph Panel, select Justify All alignment for the text and uncheck Hyphenate.

Now paste the text in the Text Box.

Step 4

Now go to Filter in the Menu Bar and hover the cursor on Distort. Then select Displace. A dialogue box will appear asking you to either Convert the Type Layer into Smart Object or Rasterize it. I will advise you to Convert To Smart Object to edit the text in the future.

Set the Horizontal and Vertical Scale Value in the Displace dialogue box and click OK. Then select the Displace File saved earlier. On applying the Displace Filter, you will notice the mapping of text on the portrait.

If required, you can apply the Displace Filter again.

Step 5

Now unlock the Background Layer by clicking on the padlock icon. Then drag the layer at the top in the Layer Panel. Right-click on the layer and select Create Clipping Mask.

Now create a new layer in the Layers Panel and go to Edit > Fill. In the Fill dialogue box, set Contents to Black and click OK. Then drag this new fill layer at the bottom of all the layers in the Layers Panel.

Note: You can adjust the Brightness/Contrast of the Image layer to make the effect look more realistic.
