How to Make a Collage in Photoshop?

Adobe Photoshop is the most popular software for photo manipulation and image editing. In today’s tutorial, you will learn to create Photoshop Collage Effect. We will use the Rectangle Tool, Move Tool, Clipping Mask, and few effects to make Collage in Photoshop. We will turn a Photo into a Collage with Photoshop in a few simple steps.

How to make Collage in Photoshop

Let’s begin with the Photoshop Collage Tutorial. Select a high quality image for the tutorial and follow the below-mentioned step-by-step process:

Step 1

Launch Adobe Photoshop and open the selected photo as a new document.

Now create a duplicate layer of the image.

Step 2

Now select the Rectangle Tool from the Tool Panel and double-click on the image. A Create Rectangle dialogue box will appear on the canvas. in that dialogue box, enter the height and width of the square.

Step 3

Select the Move Tool from the Tool Panel. Now with the help of the Move Tool, I will drag the square shape and place it on the top-left side of the image in such a manner that it covers the face of the model. Then I will rotate the square shape to -24 degrees.

To rotate the square shape, place the cursor at the corner of the square shape. When the cursor changes into a curve shape, then rotate the square shape by holding the left-click.

Similarly, create few more square shapes of the same size and place them on the image at random positions. You can rename the layers for each square shape. (See the image below)

Step 4

As you can see in the Layers Panel, that the shape layers are arranged in descending order. We will reorder the layers in ascending order. Select the layer named Rectangle 2 and along with the Shift key, drag it below the layer named Rectangle 1. Do the same with the other layers also.

Now select the Image layer and place it above the Rectangle 1 layer.

Let the Image Layer be selected and go to Layer in the Menu Bar. Then select Create Clipping Mask. Also, turn off the visibility of the Background Layer.

Rename the Image Layer as Clipping Mask 1 Layer.

Step 6

Press Ctrl + J to create a new Image Layer and rename it. Now drag that layer below Rectangle 1 Layer and create a Clipping Mask.

Similarly, create copy of the image layer for each shape layer and create Clipping Mask.

Step 7

In this step, we will create a background for our Photoshop Collage.

Click on the Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer icon in the Layers Panel. Then select Solid Color.

Color Picker dialogue box will appear on selecting Solid Color. Pick a color for the background and click OK.

Select the Color Fill layer and drag it below the rectangle 9 layer.

Step 8

Now we will apply Layer Style to each Clipping Mask. At first, we will apply Strokes to each Clipping Mask and then Drop Shadow effect.

Double-click on the Rectangle 1 layer to open the Layer Style options. Then select Strokes. Set the size of the stroke and position, and then click OK.

Again double-click on the Rectangle 1 layer and select Drop Shadow from the Layer Style dialogue box. Make required changes in the Drop Shadow settings and click OK.

Similarly, apply the Strokes and Drop Shadow to other rectangles also.
