How to Create Custom Color Palette in Photoshop?

Adobe Photoshop has a wide range of in-build color swatches sets. But, we can create our Custom Color Swatches in Photoshop. In this basic tutorial, we will see how to create a color palette in Photoshop. Also, you will learn to delete and save the color swatches in Photoshop.

The best part of Photoshop is that we can sample any color from an image. With the help of this feature, one can have a wide range of color sampling swatches sets. In this tutorial, we will sample the swatch color from an image.

Before beginning with the tutorial, select a colorful image for creating color swatches in Photoshop.

Now follow the below-mentioned steps:

Step 1

Launch Adobe Photoshop and open an image as a new document.

On the right-hand side of the document window, you will see the Swatches Panel. Alternatively, you can go to Windows and select Swatches.

Before creating a new color swatch, we will first delete the existing color swatches. Click on the swatches menu icon and select Preset Manager.

Press and hold the Alt key and then place the cursor on a color swatch in the Preset Manager window. On placing the cursor on a color swatch, you will notice a scissor icon below the cursor. Left-click on the color swatch and it will get deleted.

In the above image, you can compare both the Preset Manager windows. You will notice that the red color swatch has been deleted using the Alt key and Left-Click.

Similarly, we will remove all the remaining color swatches from the Preset Manager window.

Step 4

In this step, we will create color swatches in Photoshop.

Firstly, we will apply the Mosaic Pixelate Filter to the image. This filter will help us to easily pick colors from the image.

Go to Filter > Pixelate > Mosaic

Select Mosaic Filter

In the Mosaic Window, set the Cell Size. Check the Preview, and click OK.

Now select the Eyedropper Tool from the Tool Panel. Then place the cursor on a color cell in the image. With the right-click pick any color from the image. You can use the Zoom Tool to zoom in.

After picking up the color from the image, place the cursor in the Swatches Panel. The cursor will change into a Paint Bucket icon. Right-click in the Swatches Panel and the Color Swatch Name dialogue box will appear. In that dialogue box, you can give a name to your Swatch and then click OK. The color swatch will get created in the Swatches Panel.

Similarly, you can pick more colors from the image and create the color swatches in the Swatches Panel.

Step 5

Now in this step, we will see how to Save Color Swatches in Photoshop.

Click on the Swatches Menu Icon (4 horizontal lines in the top-right corner of Swatches Panel) then select Save Swatches.

After selecting Save Swatches, a Save As dialogue box will appear in the document area. In that dialogue box, you can give a name to your Custom Color Swatches Set and then click Save.
