Text Effect in Photoshop
In this tutorial, you will learn to create a Letter Text Effect in Photoshop. We will manipulate a photo with a letter to create this effect. This cool text effect can be used while designing an album cover, media cover page, poster, and many more.
Before beginning with this Photoshop Tutorial, select a model image. We will manipulate the photo using the Quick Selection Tool, Layer Mask, and Horizontal Type Tool. Later on, we will use adjustment layers to make the photo manipulation and effect look more realistic.
Follow the below-mentioned steps to create a Letter Text Effect in Photoshop:
Step 1
Open an image in Photoshop as a new document.
Now press Ctrl + J to create a copy of the layer. We will hide the original image layer and will work on the copied layer. This will help us to easily switch to the original layer whenever required.
Step 2
Select the copied layer and then select the Quick Selection Tool from the Tool Panel. Now select the model from the image. You can use any other selection tool to make the selection.
Now click on the Add Layer Mask icon in the Layers Panel to create a layer mask of the selection.
After creating a Layer Mask, you can refine the edges of the selection if required.
Step 3
In this step, we will create a background for our Letter Text Effect in Photoshop. Now click on Create a new layer and a blank layer will be created in the Layers Panel. Place that layer below Layer Mask Layer.
To fill color in this blank layer, select the Paint Bucket Tool and then select the Foreground color to be filled in the background. Place the Paint Bucket Tool cursor inside the canvas and left-click to fill the color.
Step 4
Select the Horizontal Type Tool from the Tool Panel and type a letter. Increase the size of the letter by setting up the font size or press Ctrl + T to freely transform the size of the letter.
In the Character Panel, you can select the font type and color of the letter.
Step 5
With the help of the Move Tool, place the model image and the letter. I have placed the model image in such a manner that it looks like the model is sitting on the letter.
You can increase or decrease the size of the model image or letter as required.
Step 6
Now if you wish you can manipulate the photo by interlacing the model image and the letter. Press and hold the Ctrl key and click on the thumbnail of the Text Layer to select the letter. Then select the model image layer mask in the Layers Panel.
To interlace the model image and the letter or to make the photo manipulation look more realistic, we will hide some parts of the model behind the letter. Select the Brush Tool and then select the foreground color as black. Hover the cursor over the parts which you want to hide. (See the below image)
Press Ctrl + D to deselect.
Step 7
In this step, we will apply some adjustment layers to the model image. Select the image layer and then click on Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer. From the options list, select Hue/Saturation. Click on the Clipping Mask icon and increase the Saturation.
Now we will select the Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer and will increase the Brightness level. Before that, make sure to select the Clipping Mask icon so that the adjustment is applied on the image layer only.
At last, I will apply the Level adjustment by setting up the shadow and mid-tone of the image.
Note: You can apply any other adjustment layers as per the requirement of your image.
Step 8
Now to complete the overall look of the Letter Text Effect in Photoshop, you can add some more text layers. You can also crop the extra space with the help of the Crop Tool.
So this is how you can create a Letter Text Effect in Photoshop.
