We will use the Pen Tool and Transform Effect to create this pattern.
Launch Adobe Illustrator and create a new document of size 500 pt X 500 pt. Now follow the below steps:
Step 1
Press Ctrl + “ to Show Grid on the artboard and then press Shift + Ctrl + “ to activate Snap to Grid.
Step 2
Select the Pen Tool and turn off the Fill color. Then draw lines as shown in the below image. The grid will help in drawing the lines properly.
Now press Ctrl + “ to Hide Grid on the artboard and then press Shift + Ctrl + “ to deactivate Snap to Grid.
Step 3
Select all the lines and increase the Stroke Weight.
Let all the lines be selected and click on Object in the Menu Bar. Then click on Expand.
Now press Ctrl + 8 to make the selection a Compound Path.
Step 4
Select the Compound Path created and click on Effect in the Menu Bar. Place the cursor on Distort & Transform and select Transform.
In the Transform Effect dialogue box, put a checkmark on Preview, and then enter value 1 in the Copies column.
Now put a checkmark on Reflect Y and set the Horizontal Move value. (See the below image)
After making the required changes, click OK.
Step 5
Again apply the Transform Effect to the selection. This time when you will select the Transform Effect, a dialogue box will appear on the artboard. In that dialogue box, select the Apply New Effect.
In that dialogue box, put a checkmark on Preview and set the number of Copies as 1. Then set the Vertical Movevalue and put a checkmark on both Reflect X and Reflect Y.
Step 6
Let the paths be selected and click on Object and then select Expand Appearance.
Now save the selected lines as a pattern in the swatches panel. Then select the Rectangle tool and draw a rectangle on the artboard and fill it with the saved pattern.
