Spiral Ribbon in Adobe Illustrator
Adobe Illustrator is a great platform to use your creativity to produce some good artwork. The tools and effects in-build in the software helps in doing the same. In today’s tutorial, we will create a Spiral Ribbon with the help of a Symbol Tool and 3D effect.
Step 1
Start by creating a new document. Now select the Rectangle Tool from the Tool Panel and draw few rectangles as shown in the below image. The width of the rectangles will define the width of your Spiral Ribbon.
Now select the topmost rectangle and click on Curvature Tool. We have selected this tool to transform the edge of the rectangle.
With the help of Curvature Tool add an anchor point on the left side of the rectangle and then with the help of the Direct Selection Tool drag that anchor point inside the rectangle to transform its shape.
Now do the same with the right-hand side of the bottom-most rectangles.
Step 2
We will create a symbol in this step.
Select all the rectangles and rotate them to 14o. Now open the Symbols Panel by clicking on Window in the Menu Bar and selecting Symbols.
Now drag the selected rectangles into the Symbols Panel to add them as a symbol.
Click OK in the Symbol Option Box to add a symbol.
Step 3
In this step, we will use the 3D effect to create the Spiral Ribbon.
Select the EllipseTool and draw a circle. Now select the circle with the help Selection Tool and right-click on Eraser Tool to select the Scissor Tool. With the help of the Scissor Tool cut the circle in half.
Delete one-half part of the circle and then select the Pen Tool and draw a straight line joining the anchor points of the remaining half part to form a semi-circle.
Select the semi-circle and click on Effect in the Menu Bar. Place the cursor on 3Dand select Revolve. 3D Revolve Option box will appear. Put a checkmark on Preview. When you will put a checkmark on Preview you will see that your semi-circle has been converted into a 3D ball.
By default, the side selected in 3D Revolve Option is Left Edge. Change it into Right Edge.
Now click on Map Art and a dialogue box will appear. In that dialogue box put a checkmark on Invisible Geometry. Now click on the symbol and select the new symbol added. And place it in the same way as shown in the image below.
Click OK after doing all the required changes.
Step 4
Now we will give a final touch to the Spiral Ribbon.
Click on Object in the Menu Bar and select Expand Appearance.
Now Ungroup the whole selection twice and then clicks on Release Clipping Mask.
After Releasing Clipping Mask, you will see all the paths of the shape. Now delete the paths from the shape which are not required.
In the above image, you can see the difference between the shapes after removing unneeded paths.
Now fill color in your Spiral Ribbon with the help of the Gradient Tool.
You can use this tutorial for creating a logo.
