In this Double Exposure in Photoshop tutorial, I have used three images to create this effect.

Double Exposure Effect

Let’s begin with the Double Exposure in Photoshop tutorial by launching Adobe Photoshop. Then follow the below step-by-step process to create the Double Exposure Effect.

Step 1

Open the main image in Photoshop as a new document. The image, which I have selected, has a white background. So, I will not make any changes in the background. If you wish you can use Layer Mask and change the background by creating a new fill of Solid Color.

Open the main image

Step 2

After opening the main image, place the other images you want to use to create the Double Exposure Effect in Photoshop. At first, I am placing a tree image. You can resize and rotate the image. Also, you can reduce the Opacity of the image.

File > Place Embedded

Select Place Embedded
Place the image

Step 3

After placing the image, change its Blending Mode to Screen. Make sure the image layer is selected while changing the Blending Mode.

Change the Blending Mode

As you can see in the above image, after changing the Blending Mode, some parts of the overlaid image are still visible over the background. To adjust it, we will use Levels. Click on Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer and select Level

Now I will blend this mountain image with the main subject to create a Double Exposure Effect. Change the Blending Mode of the Mountain Image Layer to Screen.

Step 5

Now unlock the Background Layer and click on Create a New Layer. Place this new layer below the main subject image. Then select Solid Color by clicking on Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer and fill the layer with white color tone.

Step 6

After blending and adjusting the images, we will now use the Layer Mask to give a final touch to our Double Exposure Effect in Photoshop.

I will select the Mountain Layer and click on Layer Mask icon in the Layer Panel. Then select the Brush Tool and select a soft brush. While using the Layer Mask and Brush Tool, make sure that the Foreground Color is Black. The Black color will hide the part of images.

Now create a Layer Mask in the Main Subject Layer and hide the part of image which is not required in the effect. Similarly, use the Layer Mask and Brush Tool for hiding the parts of images of other image layers.
