Rubik’s Cube is a 3D puzzle that we all must have tried to solve. Some might have got succeeded and some might have not but it doesn’t matter. Solving a Rubik’s Cube has nothing to do with today’s tutorial. It is about making 3D Rubik’s Cube in Adobe Illustrator.
Follow the below steps to learn to make 3D Rubik’s Cube in Adobe Illustrator.
The first thing to do is to open Adobe Illustrator and create a new document.
Step 1
Select the Rectangle Tool and draw 3 vertical rectangles of size 63.551 X 189.72 pt. Now draw 3 horizontal rectangles of size 189.72 X 63.551 pt.
Now place the rectangles all together forming small squares as shown in the below image.
Step 2
After placing all the rectangles as shown in Step 1, Press Ctrl + A and then go to the Pathfinder Panel and click on Divide.
You can open Pathfinder Panel by clicking on Window in the Menu Bar and then selecting Pathfinder. The Pathfinder Panel will appear on the artboard.
Now your 6 rectangles will get divided into 9 small squares.
Step 3
With the help of Alt Key make 2 more duplicate copies of the squares.
Now Ungroup all the squares and fill them with different colors but the stroke color will be the same for all the squares. Stroke color will be Black with Stroke Size of 4pt.
If you don’t want to fill the squares with random color them you can select 3 different colors for each section of 9 squares.
Step 4
Now we will make 3 groups of these squares and arrange them to make our 3D Rubik’s Cube.
Select one set of 9 small squares and Right-click on the mouse. Now select Group.
In a similar way group the other two sets also.
Now select the first group of squares and click on Effect in the Menu Bar and then place the cursor on 3D and select Rotate.
3D Rotate Options dialogue box will appear on the artboard. In that dialogue box, set the position of rotation as Isometric Left.
Check the Preview and click OK.
Now in a similar way Rotate the other sets also. One will be rotated in the Isometric Right position and others will be rotated in the Isometric Top position.
Step 5
Now bring all the sets of squares close to each other to form a cube shape and this is how our 3D Rubik’s Cube will get shape.
